Remains of Final Hurricane Helene Victim Found in Tennessee
· World · Hindustan Times, The Independent
Search teams in Washington County, Tennessee, have recovered the remains of 76-year-old Nancy Tucker, the last missing victim of Hurricane Helene. She and her husband, Jimmy Tucker, were swept away by floodwaters from the Nolichucky River on September 27, 2024. While her husband's body was recovered shortly after the storm, Nancy Tucker remained missing for two years due to massive debris piles in the Cherokee National Forest. Local responders were initially unable to use heavy machinery to clear the site because it was federal land and contained potential Native American burial sites. A federal contract for the debris removal was only awarded this summer, leading to the discovery of her remains just four days after operations began.
Why it matters
The recovery brings closure to the family of the final missing victim of the 2024 storm, which caused nearly $80 billion in damage and killed over 250 people across the US.
