Remembering Jogen Chowdhury: Artist and dreamer of institutions passes away

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

Jogen Chowdhury, a prominent painter from Bengal who rose in the 1960s, died after a year-long battle with cancer. Born into a landed family in pre-Partition East Bengal, he became a refugee in Calcutta, an experience that deeply shaped his art. Trained in Calcutta and Paris, he developed a distinctive style blending village embroidery and ritual graphics with expressive lines. He worked at the Weavers Service Centre in Madras before moving to Delhi as Keeper of the collection at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and later joined the art college at Santiniketan in 1987.

Why it matters

The art world loses a pioneer who bridged personal memory and social commentary, influencing generations of Indian artists who navigate multiple registers of expression.
