Republican Candidates Skip Trump’s Dallas Midterm Convention
· World · Hindustan Times, Times of India
More than half of the 70 Republican candidates and lawmakers surveyed by Politico plan to skip the party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas on September 9 and 10. Figures including Senator Susan Collins and Representative Tom Barrett cited campaign priorities in their home districts as the reason for their absence. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson are confirmed to attend the two-day event. The convention, dubbed “Trumpapalooza” by RNC Chair Joe Gruters, aims to unify the party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Why it matters
The low turnout among key Republican candidates reflects internal party concerns regarding Donald Trump's popularity and the potential risk of losing House and Senate majorities.
