Researchers Track $80 Million Spent on AI-Generated Midterm Ads

· World · The Independent, Fortune

Researchers studying the Wesleyan Media Project tracked approximately $80 million spent on nearly 170 unique AI-generated political advertisements during the 2026 US midterm election cycle. Data compiled from media reports, student coders, and ad tracking firm AdImpact revealed that Republican sponsors used AI tools far more frequently than Democratic sponsors. The investigated ads featured hyperrealistic deepfakes of prominent politicians, including Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Other synthetic scenarios included a Louisiana Senate candidate driving a bus filled with undocumented immigrants and a South Carolina gubernatorial candidate walking with drag queens. Due to fragmented state legislation, many of these synthetic advertisements omitted AI disclosures entirely.

Why it matters

The widespread deployment of undisclosed synthetic deepfakes in political campaigns distorts public discourse and challenges existing regulatory frameworks.
