Retail Inflation Hits 8-Month High at 4.8% in August

· Business · Times of India, The Independent

India’s retail inflation surged to an 8-month high of 4.8% year-on-year in August, driven by rising food prices, according to data from the National Statistics Office (NSO). This marks the third consecutive month the inflation rate has exceeded the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 4% target, though it remains within the acceptable 2-6% range. Food inflation accelerated to 6%, up from 5.5% in July, while rural inflation rose to 5.2% and urban inflation to 4.3%. Wholesale price inflation also climbed to 9.9%, fueled by higher fuel and manufactured goods costs. The RBI’s monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting in October will be critical, as experts warn that sustained inflation could prompt an earlier rate hike, potentially shifting from December to October.

Why it matters

Higher inflation directly impacts consumers through rising food and fuel costs, squeezing household budgets and increasing the cost of living. For the RBI, this could force a preemptive interest rate hike, affecting loans, savings, and economic growth. Businesses, especially those in food and transport sectors, face higher input costs, potentially leading to price hikes or reduced margins.
