Average all-India retail sugar prices declined by 3.85% over the past week to Rs 62.57 per kg, according to data from the consumer affairs ministry. This shift follows government measures, including the authorization of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar imports and stricter stockholding norms for dealers. Despite the weekly dip, retail prices remain 27% higher than they were a month ago, when the average was Rs 49.33 per kg. Wholesale prices have seen a sharper decline, falling to Rs 57.62 per kg as of September 2. Industry sources note that retail prices take approximately ten days to adjust as traders work through existing, higher-priced inventory.
