Rival Trinamool factions get new names, symbols for October 6 bypolls

· India · The Hindu, NDTV, Zee News

The Election Commission of India has assigned fresh names and symbols to the two warring factions of the All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the upcoming Assembly bypolls in West Bengal. The Mamata Banerjee-led faction will now be known as the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress with the 'football player' symbol, while the Arup Roy-led faction has been allotted the name Democratic Trinamool Congress and the 'envelope' symbol. This directive follows a decision on Thursday barring both groups from using the original party name and symbol in the October 6 elections. The bypolls are scheduled to take place in the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies. Both factions submitted alternative names and symbols to the Commission as instructed.

Why it matters

This decision reshapes the electoral identity of the factionalised All India Trinamool Congress just weeks before crucial Assembly bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar, forcing voters to navigate new names and symbols.
