Rivian to Integrate Third-Party AI Agents into Electric Vehicles

· Automobile · TechCrunch

Rivian plans to integrate third-party artificial intelligence agents from companies like Anthropic into its electric vehicles in future updates. Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe announced the roadmap at TechCrunch Disrupt, noting that the feature will build on the company's existing in-house voice assistant. The vehicle software routes commands through an internal agentic framework that decides whether to process requests using local edge models or cloud systems. Scaringe emphasised that while external agents will expand functionality, safety-critical vehicle controls such as steering and braking will remain strictly isolated from third-party software. Rivian has not yet announced a timeline for the rollout, directing observers to its upcoming AI and Autonomy Day event in December.

Why it matters

This integration signals a shift toward opening proprietary vehicle software to frontier AI developers, transforming electric cars into software platforms while maintaining strict boundaries around safety systems.
