Riyadh Energy Conference Continues Following Deadly Airport Attack
· Business · Al Jazeera, France 24, Euronews
The 25th World Petroleum Council Energy Congress has commenced in Riyadh despite a Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport that resulted in 12 deaths and 309 injuries. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy confirmed the event is proceeding alongside the 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial. While the forum includes 68 countries representing over 90 percent of global oil and gas supply, Italy is participating via videolink. The ongoing US-Israel war on Iran has disrupted energy flows, prompting global concerns regarding supply security. Fossil fuels currently account for nearly 81 percent of global energy consumption, with the Middle East serving as a critical production region.
Why it matters
The disruption of energy transit through key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea threatens global oil and gas supplies, directly impacting energy costs for importing nations like India.
