RJD Seeks Disqualification of Independent MLCs Who Joined BJP

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha has announced plans to approach the Bihar Legislative Council chairman and the Election Commission to seek the disqualification of two newly elected Independent MLCs, Rahul Kumar and Banshidhar Brajwasi. The two MLCs joined the BJP one day after the results for the eight Bihar Legislative Council seats were declared on October 29. Jha accused the BJP of attempting to weaken its NDA ally, the Janata Dal (United), by inducting the members. The RJD claims that current rules mandate the disqualification of Independent members who join a political party after being elected.
Why it matters
The defection of the Independent MLCs to the BJP creates friction within the NDA alliance in Bihar and has prompted a formal legal challenge from the opposition RJD.
