Robbery Accused Escapes Again from Coimbatore Central Prison After Handcuffs Removed

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

A robbery accused named Raghavan escaped from Coimbatore Central Prison on Friday after police removed his handcuffs during admission procedures, marking his second escape from custody within 24 hours. The previous evening, he had fled from Annur police station but was recaptured. His latest escape came despite tightened security at the prison following the October 26 jailbreak in Theni district, where 17 remand prisoners escaped after allegedly attacking staff. All 17 Theni escapees have since been returned to custody — 15 caught and two surrendered. Coimbatore prison, established in 1872, holds about 2,300 inmates under the watch of roughly 300 guards and police personnel. Security was also reinforced at the prisoners' ward in Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital after a separate escape months earlier.

Why it matters

Repeated jailbreaks in Tamil Nadu within days expose systemic security failures in the state's prison administration, risking public safety and undermining judicial processes.
