Romania F-16 Shoots Down Armed Drone Near Black Sea Gas Project
· World · The Hindu, Reuters
A Romanian F‑16 fighter jet destroyed a marine drone loaded with explosives near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea. The drone was spotted at 06:28 local time, 80 nautical miles east of Constanta, and was not reported to have originated from Ukraine. Two F‑16 aircraft were deployed, and one intercepted the drone before it could enter Romania’s exclusive economic zone. Romania’s President Nicusor Dan blamed Russia for the incident, while the European Commission’s Ursula von der Leyen condemned the escalating threats against the EU. Neptun Deep, where hundreds of workers are stationed, is scheduled to begin production in 2027. The event follows a series of drone attacks in the region, including a Ukrainian maritime drone that detonated near Constanta in June.
Why it matters
The incident heightens security concerns for Romania’s offshore gas operations and reflects the broader conflict dynamics between NATO and Russia, potentially prompting increased defense posturing in the Black Sea region.
