Ronald Araujo Emerges as Key Defensive Option for Liverpool
· Sports · BBC Sport
Defender Ronald Araujo has established himself as a regular starter for Liverpool after joining the club on a season-long loan from Barcelona. The 27-year-old Uruguayan has started eight of Liverpool's 10 games under manager Andoni Iraola, playing six matches at right-back and four at centre-back. Araujo scored his first goal for the club in a header against LASK and provided a backheel assist for Dominik Szoboszlai against Atletico Madrid. His extended playing time comes as full-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong remain sidelined with injuries. Liverpool holds an option to buy the defender for £47m at the end of the season.
Why it matters
Araujo's versatility has provided crucial depth for Liverpool's defensive line during a period of key injuries to regular full-backs.
