Royal Navy sailor in court accused of preparing to spy for Russia

· World · BBC News, Telegraph India

Royal Navy Able Seaman Teddy Young, 24, from Bedfordshire, has been charged under the National Security Act with obtaining protected information that could benefit an unnamed foreign power. He was arrested at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday and remanded into custody, with a court appearance scheduled for Thursday at Westminster Magistrates' Court. The charges allege conduct between 26 November 2024 and 21 May 2025, including obtaining, copying, or retaining protected information intending to benefit a foreign power. Police confirmed the charges are unrelated to the recent RAF Fairford incident, which led to seven arrests and subsequent bail releases. Cdr Helen Flanagan of Counter-Terrorism Policing London described the charges as very serious against a serving armed forces member. A Royal Navy spokesperson confirmed the charge but declined further comment due to ongoing legal proceedings.

Why it matters

The case raises concerns about insider threats within the UK armed forces and the potential compromise of sensitive military information. It highlights ongoing vulnerabilities to foreign intelligence attempts targeting defence personnel.
