Rubio Threatens Sanctions on Countries Aiding Iran After Modi-Pezeshkian SCO Meet
· World · Indian Express, Times of India, NDTV
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that any country helping Iran evade sanctions would itself face sanctions, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek. Speaking on The Brian Kilmeade Show on Fox News Radio, Rubio said no country should be helping Tehran "create mechanisms by which they can generate revenue" that funds terrorism or nuclear weapons. He acknowledged that many countries engage with the Iranian regime and that the US itself has held discussions with Iranian elements, but stressed that contact should not enable sanctions evasion. Modi told SCO leaders that "a conflict in one region does not remain confined there" and urged dialogue and diplomacy over military solutions, with the West Asia war entering its sixth month.
Why it matters
The Rubio warning puts India and other Iranian oil importers on notice over potential secondary sanctions, directly affecting India's energy procurement and strategic autonomy as it balances ties with Washington and Tehran.
