Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old from Pennsylvania, died after collapsing 3km from the finish line of the New York City Marathon. Her father stated that she suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition where muscles break down during intense physical exertion. Bystanders and medical staff attempted to perform CPR and used a defibrillator before she was transported to a hospital. The New York City medical examiner's office is currently investigating the exact cause of death. Apa was running the race to raise money for Parkinson's disease research.
