Rupee snaps losing streak on RBI support, oil retreat

· Business · Economic Times, financialexpress

The Indian rupee broke its week-long losing streak on Friday, driven by active dollar sales from the Reserve Bank of India and a mild decline in oil prices. The currency closed at 95.87, registering a minor gain from its previous close of 95.93. During the session, Brent crude oil prices fell to nearly $101 per barrel. Meanwhile, a firm dollar index at 101.3 and steady importer demand for the US currency limited further appreciation. The rupee has weakened 1.05% so far this fiscal year, though the pace of its decline has slowed following a near-10% retreat in FY26.

Why it matters

The Reserve Bank of India's intervention helps stabilise the currency against volatile global oil prices and persistent import demand, shielding domestic importers and consumers from sharper currency depreciation.
