Rupee Weakens to Two-Week Low After RBI Curtails Forex Swap Window
· Business · Economic Times, Indian Express, Reuters
The Indian rupee fell 0.2% to 95.60 against the US dollar on Monday, marking its weakest level in two weeks. The decline followed the Reserve Bank of India's surprise decision to shorten the deadline for its discounted forex swap facility by one month. Traders reported that persistent importer demand for dollars further pressured the currency, despite likely intervention by the central bank. The 1-year implied yield for dollar-rupee forward premiums rose 8 basis points to 2.79% in response to the announcement. Analysts at BoFA Global Research have since increased their estimate for total inflows from the facility to $80 billion, citing stronger-than-expected participation.
Why it matters
The RBI's move to tighten liquidity windows directly impacts currency volatility and import costs for Indian businesses, while the shift in swap conditions alters expectations for foreign exchange reserves.
