Russia and China Leaders to Meet at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit
· World · Al Jazeera, Times of India
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to gather in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday for the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation alongside more than a dozen other leaders. The 25-year-old bloc now includes 10 permanent members—such as Iran, India, and Pakistan—along with 15 dialogue partners including Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. While the organisation historically focuses on economic issues, leaders are expected to use the summit to present a united front and promote a multipolar world against the West. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are also scheduled to attend, with Pezeshkian slated for bilateral talks with Putin. The summit comes shortly after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to urge G20 members to re-examine trade terms with China over its $1.2 trillion trade surplus.
Why it matters
The gathering brings together key leaders representing major regional and global economies amidst rising trade tensions with the United States, carrying significant diplomatic and economic implications for Eurasian stability.
