Russia Announces Plans for Massive Strikes on Ukraine Energy Sector

· World · The Hindu, The Independent

Russia's Defence Ministry stated on August 30, 2026, that it is preparing large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The ministry described the planned strikes as a retaliatory measure for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil and energy facilities. During the previous winter, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian power plants, which caused widespread power outages and heating failures across the country. On August 30, the Russian military claimed to have struck a facility in Kyiv used for drone and munitions production, as well as an asbestos and cement plant. These developments follow a strike on August 29 that hit an ammunition depot in the suburbs of Kyiv, resulting in at least 37 deaths.

Why it matters

The planned escalation threatens to destabilize Ukraine's power grid, potentially leaving millions of civilians without electricity or heating during the upcoming winter months. This cycle of long-range strikes on energy and industrial infrastructure continues to increase civilian casualties and economic damage in both nations.
