Russia bombarded nine Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones in an overnight assault that stretched into August 27, 2026, the Russian Defence Ministry said, describing the strikes as "massive" and aimed at military-related targets including industrial facilities, oil refineries, logistics hubs and port infrastructure. The barrage killed a 78-year-old woman in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and another person in the northern Kharkiv region, with at least 14 people wounded elsewhere. Explosions were heard in Kyiv through the morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia "continues to invest in missiles and expanding its war" and called for more ballistic missile defence packages from European partners, following earlier promises of air defence assistance. Ukraine is short of US-made Patriot missiles to counter Russian ballistic missiles, and Moscow's fast-flying jet-powered drones have added a new challenge since the full-scale invasion began four and a half years ago
