Russia Unveils Shturm Unmanned Tank as India Advances Military Robotics

· World · Times of India, The Hindu

Russia has fielded the Shturm unmanned heavy assault tank, designed for breaching fortified defenses and urban combat, at the Center-2026 military exercises. Built on a T-72 chassis, the robotic system operates within a manned-unmanned teaming framework, controlled by a separate crewed command vehicle carrying three operators within a three to four kilometre line of sight. Meanwhile, the Indian Army is pursuing a similar capability by converting its existing T-72 tanks into remotely operated vehicles using IP-based interfaces. India has opened this modernization initiative to domestic industry partners through the iDEX Aditi 4.0 program to secure resilient connectivity in contested environments. Other global militaries, including China and Australia, are also actively developing comparable robotic combat systems.

Why it matters

The rapid advancement of combat robotics marks a fundamental shift in armored warfare, prioritizing crew safety and automated tactical execution on future battlefields.
