Russian General Charged Over Hospital Strike Shot in Engels

Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of a Russian heavy bomber division, was shot twice by a motorbike gunman in the Saratov region and airlifted to Moscow in serious condition. The attack occurred outside a shop in the village of Probuzhdeniye near the Engels-2 airbase, with bullets striking him in the face and torso. Ukrainian authorities had previously charged Varpakhovich in absentia for allegedly ordering the July 2024 missile strike on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv, which killed two people. Russian authorities have not officially confirmed his identity, though military Telegram channels identified him as the wounded officer.
