Russian Missiles Hit Kyiv Transport Infrastructure as Nordic Leaders Call Putin

· World · Al Jazeera, The Independent

Russian forces launched a barrage of 16 ballistic missiles and over 280 drones targeting transport infrastructure in Kyiv, striking the South Bridge during overnight attacks. Officials reported that strikes also caused deaths and injuries in Kharkiv, Pavlohrad, and the Russian city of Bryansk, while a drone strike on a bus in the Russian-controlled part of Zaporizhzhia killed one person and injured 30. The attacks occurred as Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store held a rare phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss de-escalation ahead of US-mediated technical talks in Abu Dhabi. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who spoke with the Nordic leaders afterward, stated that real steps are needed to halt attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure. Kyiv and Moscow have agreed to hold the technical meetings in Abu Dhabi in early November.

Why it matters

The escalation directly threatens civilian logistics and energy security in Ukraine while international mediators attempt to set up direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
