Russian Strikes Hit Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure Amid Kherson Ceasefire
· World · BBC News
Russian missile strikes targeted energy infrastructure across four Ukrainian regions overnight on Saturday, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power. In the Vinnytsia region, an overnight attack resulted in two deaths, including a 13-year-old girl. Ukraine reported a retaliatory strike on a missile fuel production facility in Russia's Rostov region, which caused fires and damaged four production sites. Meanwhile, a localised humanitarian ceasefire in the Kherson region, which allowed for the evacuation of the occupied city of Oleshky, is scheduled to end on Sunday night. Emergency power cuts remain in effect across Ukraine, including in Kyiv, as the country continues to face high-intensity Russian aerial bombardment.
Why it matters
The ongoing destruction of energy infrastructure leaves hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians without heat and electricity as winter approaches, while the exhaustion of ballistic missile interceptors limits Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
