· Sports · BBC News, BBC Sport, Bloomberg
Rwanda has signed a 10-year agreement with Formula 1 to host a grand prix in the country starting in the early 2030s. The races will take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, located 25 miles south of the capital Kigali and adjacent to the city's new international airport. Designed by former driver Alex Wurz, the circuit utilizes local elevation changes to create a challenging course. President Paul Kagame stated that the event will bring long-term jobs, skills, and tourism benefits to the region. F1 president Stefano Domenicali confirmed the move marks the sport's return to the African continent for the first time since 1993.
Why it matters
The agreement expands Formula 1's presence to every inhabited continent and opens a major new motorsport market in East Africa. The project is expected to drive significant infrastructure development and tourism in Rwanda.
