San Francisco Startup Discovered Materials Offers $1 Million AI Challenge

· Technology · TechCrunch

San Francisco-based startup Discovered Materials has launched a $1 million prize pool for AI models that can solve five complex problems in materials science. The company, a member of the Y Combinator spring 2026 batch, aims to address challenges that current frontier AI models have struggled to navigate. The five problems include developing a theory for cuprate superconductivity, predicting silicon-silicon dioxide interface structures, and mapping grain structures to thermal properties. Other challenges involve predicting light-induced behavioral changes in materials and improving Density Functional Theory. The startup previously tested autonomous AI agents on these tasks, but the models were unable to make significant progress.

Why it matters

Solving these materials science problems could accelerate advancements in electronics, energy storage, and semiconductor manufacturing by enabling the discovery of more efficient substances.
