· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, NDTV
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has defended Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi against accusations of using unparliamentary language toward Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Lok Sabha secretariat has issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi following breach of privilege complaints filed by BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Sanjay Jaiswal. The complaints stem from remarks made during a debate on the anti-paper leak bill. Rahul Gandhi has until August 28 to submit his formal response to the allegations. Raut argued that the term used was not unparliamentary, citing the cultural relevance of the movie 3 Idiots.
Why it matters
The breach of privilege notice against the leader of the opposition marks a significant escalation in parliamentary tensions between the government and the opposition.
