Satellite imagery shows a fresh build-up of rain-bearing clouds over the Bay of Bengal and eastern India, signalling that the southwest monsoon is far from over. Latest INSAT-3DS thermal infrared images indicate widespread convective cloud activity stretching from the Bay of Bengal into eastern and central India, associated with a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observed the system at 2:30 pm IST on August 16 and expects it to strengthen into a depression on August 17. The developing system will pump moisture deep into the mainland, triggering widespread rainfall across eastern, central, and northern India through the coming week. In response to anticipated squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-60 kmph, the IMD has issued warnings advising fishermen not to venture into the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal until August 18.
