Satellite images captured by Planet Labs reveal that a green mountainside near Nepal's border with Tibet has been transformed into a broad expanse of brown debris following a devastating flash flood. Experts examining the imagery trace the disaster to the collapse of a glacier's lower end at an altitude of approximately 5,200 metres, which plunged 1,200 metres into the valley below. Sikkim University engineering geology specialist Vikram Gupta and University of Calgary earth scientist Dan Shugar confirmed that the ice-rock avalanche sent a destructive surge downstream through river systems, affecting communities including Manakamana and Khadga Bhanjyang. Early reports had suggested an earthquake as a potential trigger, but the US Geological Survey clarified that recorded seismic activity stemmed from the collapse itself rather than a separate tectonic event. Comparative images taken between August 23 and August 26 document the stark landscape changes across the affected border valleys.
