Satya Niketan Collapse: Illegal Work, Old Structure Under Probe

Investigators are probing whether illegal construction in the basement of a 40-year-old building in Satya Niketan, New Delhi, contributed to its collapse on Sunday. The basement used to get waterlogged, which may have weakened the structure, and repair or construction work during the monsoon could have aggravated the situation. The MCD said the building violated the prescribed height limit of 17.5 metres, and Mayor Pravesh Wahi confirmed it was a ground-plus-four structure with 13 students registered as paying guests. The adjoining building was found to have structural deficiencies, including the absence of a proper beam structure, and has been vacated. The building owner, contractor and labourers will be interrogated, and police are examining how permission for work was given during the monsoon season.
