Saudi Arabia Intercepts Houthi Drone Near Mecca, Gulf Tanker Caught Fire

· World · The Independent, NDTV

Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels near Mecca, according to a coalition statement released on Friday. The Houthis' military spokesperson denied conducting any operations targeting Mecca, saying the group's strikes focus on Saudi oil facilities and military bases. In a separate incident, a tanker fire erupted in the Strait of Hormuz after a small boat attached explosives to its hull while the vessel was sailing about 46 kilometers northeast of Khasab, Oman. The British military reported no crew injuries, no environmental damage, and identified no suspect for the attack. Iranian media also said three oil tankers struck mines in the strait on Thursday, escalating regional tensions amid increased shipping attacks this October.

Why it matters

The drone interception heightens the risk to one of Islam's holiest sites, potentially endangering millions of pilgrims and increasing regional volatility. The tanker attack threatens oil shipment safety in a critical chokepoint, which could affect global oil prices and disrupt energy supplies to India and other importing nations. Both incidents underscore the intensifying Iran–Saudi rivalry and the vulnerability of maritime trade routes vital to the Indian economy.
