Saudi Arabia Offers $1 Billion to Houthis for Ceasefire With Pakistan's Munir at Talks

· World · India Today, NDTV

Saudi Arabia has offered $1 billion to Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen to secure a ceasefire and restore oil exports, according to a report by Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom. The talks took place in Tehran with Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin meeting Iranian officials. The Saudi minister reportedly carried the money on a Hercules military transport aircraft, though no payment has been confirmed. The negotiations are part of the Mecca pact efforts to de-escalate Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities as well as Iranian-linked tanker strikes in the Strait of Hormuz.

Why it matters

A Saudi-Houthi deal backed by Pakistan and Turkey could stabilise Gulf energy flows and reduce a major flashpoint in the Middle East, directly affecting India's crude imports and diaspora in the region.
