Saudi Grand Mufti Urges Troops to Sacrifice Lives Against Houthis
· World · Times of India, NDTV, The Independent
Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan Al-Fawzan urged troops deployed along the kingdom's borders to be prepared to sacrifice their lives in the fight against Yemen's Houthi movement. The call was made through Saudi state media, where he described defending the nation and punishing those who threaten its territory as among the greatest duties of devotion. He called for the complete defeat of the Houthis and their supporters, while asking God to protect Saudi Arabia and Yemen from harm. The statement came as Saudi Arabia reported intercepting six ballistic missiles aimed at Taif and Yanbu, while Houthis claimed attacks on Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu. The escalation follows a major Houthi advance along Yemen's western coast, including control of territory near the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
Why it matters
Saudi troops and civilians in border regions face heightened risk as the conflict intensifies, with potential for further missile and drone attacks. The religious endorsement may mobilise greater public and military support for prolonging the war in Yemen.
