Saudi-led coalition says it destroyed Houthi missile tunnels and launchers in Yemen

· World · The Independent, The Hindu

The Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen's Houthi rebels said on Monday it destroyed five tunnels used to store ballistic missiles, four missile launchers and another missile storage facility in Houthi-controlled territory. Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said the operation also targeted supply lines and rebel fortifications along front lines inside Yemen. Explosions were heard in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa and the Red Sea port city of Mokha, where residents reported a rocket striking a residential building and damaging at least 10 homes and a hospital. The Houthis, meanwhile, claimed they struck Saudi-backed government forces in Aden and Lahj provinces with missiles. Both sides' claims could not be independently verified.

Why it matters

The strikes degrade the Houthis' ability to fire missiles into Saudi Arabia and mark another escalation in the nearly decade-long conflict that controls Red Sea shipping lanes and affects global energy routes.
