SC Asks Centre to Extend Tenure of Retiring Tribunal Members

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The Supreme Court has urged the central government to consider extending the tenure of retiring presiding officers and members across various tribunals to prevent them from becoming defunct. Attorney General Venkataramani informed the bench that 248 members were found eligible for extension under the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Bagchi and Mohana, noted that the process for fresh appointments is already in motion. The court suggested that current arrangements could continue for a month or two until new appointments are finalised.

Why it matters

Vacancies in quasi-judicial bodies can lead to significant delays in legal proceedings and affect the functioning of essential administrative tribunals.
