SC Directs Karnataka to Comply With Cauvery Water Releases, Waits a Week to Assess Status

The Supreme Court on Monday directed Karnataka to ensure compliance with the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s directions on releasing water to Tamil Nadu. A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta decided to wait another week to assess whether Karnataka continues to honour the water-sharing order, noting that Tamil Nadu currently has sufficient water and no immediate intervention is required. Appearing for Tamil Nadu, senior advocate CS Vaidyanathan submitted that Karnataka was not complying with the authority's directions and that Tamil Nadu received only 14 TMC of water compared to the 64 TMC due under the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award. Representing Karnataka, senior advocate Shyam Divan disputed the non-compliance allegation, stating that the state had exceeded the daily requirement of 3,500 cusecs and that the flow had exceeded 12,000 cusecs by Monday morning.
