SC Directs Schools to Train Students on Solid Waste Management

On 20 August 2026, the Supreme Court ordered education departments nationwide to embed solid waste management content in school curricula. Students are to be trained as household supervisors who will educate parents and relatives on the SWM Rules, 2026, according to a bench of Justices SVN Bhatti and NV Anjaria. The Court also instructed teachers to become trainers and mandated district collectors to alter public attitudes by bringing family members into the SWM program. District education departments must conduct periodic audits and submit reports to collectors, who will forward them to state chief secretaries. The Court warned that continued complacency could lead to pandemic and endemic situations, stressing that the responsibility for waste does not rest solely on sanitation workers.
