SC Issues Notice To Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav Over Oct 12 March
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, India Today
The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other protestors regarding their October 12 march to the apex court. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that the court would ask Rahul to explain how crowds entered the Supreme Court premises during the demonstration. The opposition's 'Chalo Dilli – March for Democracy' brought thousands of supporters into central Delhi to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police stopped the procession near Barakhamba Road, where demonstrators pushed through barricades and climbed onto parked police vehicles and buses. The Supreme Court also issued a notice to the Election Commission of India on a separate opposition petition challenging the electoral roll revision process.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's intervention addresses the security breach and crowd control failures during the central Delhi protest, while setting up a judicial review of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
