SC Orders Banks to Compensate Digital Fraud Victims
· India · Times of India, India Today, Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court ruled that banks must compensate customers who fall victim to digital fraud, emphasizing they should act as a protective umbrella. A bench led by CJI Surya Kant questioned why large withdrawals from a retiree’s account did not trigger timely intervention. Attorney General R Venkataramani said banks are improving in detecting suspicious transactions and preventive measures are being implemented. The amicus curiae sought reports from state police forces, noting that digital arrest scams persist despite awareness campaigns.
Why it matters
Customers, especially vulnerable retirees, will now have a clearer legal recourse against banks for failing to prevent fraudulent withdrawals. The ruling pressures banks to strengthen fraud detection and response mechanisms to avoid liability.
