Mumbai police have registered an abetment case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and invoked the SC/ST Act following the death of a 22-year-old student at IIT Bombay. Sahil Ravindra Wakode, a second-year BTech student in the Energy Science and Engineering department, was found hanging in his hostel room on the Powai campus on Friday evening. His parents alleged caste discrimination and institutional harassment, with his mother stating her son was tortured and killed. Hours before his death, Sahil was caught using a mobile phone during an examination and had uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT. IIT Bombay denied initiating disciplinary proceedings, stating that instructors had counseled him and assured him the incident would not affect his academic career, while protesting students demanded a transparent inquiry and the resignation of Director Shireesh Kedare.
