SC to Hear Surendra Gadling's Bail Plea in 2016 Surjagarh Arson Case on Oct 14

The Supreme Court will on October 14 hear advocate Surendra Gadling's bail plea in the 2016 Surjagarh iron ore mine arson case, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Augustine George Masih and Sandeep Mehta ordered on Tuesday. Gadling has challenged a January 2023 Bombay High Court (Nagpur bench) order that refused him bail, with senior advocate Kapil Sibal arguing that Gadling has spent more than seven years in jail and that co-accused in the truck-burning incident have already been granted bail. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Maharashtra government, said the prosecution needed to point out the evidence against him and sought a non-miscellaneous day for hearing. On December 25, 2016, Maoist rebels allegedly set ablaze 76 vehicles used for transporting iron ore from the Surjagarh mines in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, and Gadling is accused of providing secret information and maps to the rebels and instigating locals to oppose the mines.
