SC Urges Better Sense in CJP Protest Amid Trader Losses

· India · Hindustan Times, News18, Times of India

The Supreme Court expressed hope that "better sense will prevail" regarding protests by the Cockroach Janta Party at Central Park in Connaught Place, Delhi, against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The bench, led by CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, stressed balancing the right to protest with the livelihoods of small traders and daily-wage earners during the festive season. The court warned it could award compensation if protest restrictions disproportionately affect businesses and directed the matter be listed for hearing on October 26 or 27 after its Dussehra vacation. Traders' advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai claimed disruptions are causing losses exceeding ₹250 crore daily and cited an NDMC notification closing Central Park. The protests stem from allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls by the Election Commission.

Why it matters

Small traders and daily-wage earners in Connaught Place face significant daily income losses due to the protest-related disruptions during the peak festive season. The SC's intervention highlights the tension between democratic protest rights and economic survival for vulnerable urban workers.
