Scammers Use AI to Pinpoint Holiday Photo Locations and Target Bank Accounts

Fraudsters are using artificial intelligence tools to extract location data from vacation photos posted on Instagram and Facebook to construct convincing phishing scams. McAfee tested free AI models on over 21,000 travel images and found accuracy rates between 87% and 91% in identifying precise locations from background architecture, lighting, and signage. Criminals leverage this extracted location data to send personalized text messages alleging compromised bank accounts while travelers are away. McAfee executives noted that computers do not require explicit metadata tags to determine where a photo was captured.
