SDRF Launches Aerial Search for Eight Missing Trekkers in Uttarakhand
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
The State Disaster Response Force launched a search operation in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Sunday for seven trekkers and one guide stranded near Kedartal. A 13-member expedition departed Gangotri on October 27 and failed to return by their October 29 deadline due to heavy snowfall and glacier blockages. Severe mountain weather obstructed ground rescue teams, prompting the SDRF to conduct helicopter reconnaissance flights from Harsil over Kedartal. Aerial teams spotted no signs of the missing group or their tents, while ground officials confirmed that at least one trekker suffered a head injury. Additional SDRF personnel with specialized mountaineering equipment have reached Gangotri to continue search operations as weather permits.
Why it matters
The operation affects the missing expedition members and their families while exposing severe weather hazards facing mountain climbers in the Himalayas.
