SEBI relaxed KYC rules for NRIs, OCIs and foreign nationals, permitting eligible investors in FATF-compliant countries to complete onboarding digitally from overseas. The circular dated November 4, 2026, states that Persons Resident Outside India (PROIs) in FATF-compliant jurisdictions can submit KYC details and documents digitally, with the framework effective from December 3, 2026. Eligible clients can use scanned copies with electronic signatures, digitally signed forms, or physical submissions, while PAN details will be verified against the Income Tax Database without physical cards. Video In-Person Verification (VIPV) is permitted where physical verification is not feasible, subject to live GPS coordinates and random actions.
Why it matters
Overseas Indian and OCI investors can now onboard digitally without physical presence in India, expanding access to Indian markets.
