SEBI Bars Two Entities for Market Manipulation in Closing Auction

· Business · LiveMint, Economic Times, Zee News

The Securities and Exchange Board of India has barred Copthall Mauritius Investment Ltd and Mansi Share and Stock Broking Pvt Ltd from market access. The regulator ordered the entities to deposit a combined ₹3.68 crore for alleged manipulation during the SENSEX closing auction session on 13 August. This marks the first time the regulator has initiated formal proceedings against entities for misconduct during this specific trading window. Investigations revealed sharp, artificial spikes in the SENSEX during the session, with Copthall allegedly placing aggressive buy orders and Mansi placing significant sell orders before cancelling them. The order remains an ex-parte interim measure.

Why it matters

This action sets a precedent for regulatory oversight in the newly introduced closing auction session, aiming to protect market integrity and prevent artificial price discovery.
