SEBI Launches Project Jagrook to Boost Investor Awareness
· Business · Economic Times, Indian Express
SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey inaugurated Project Jagrook at Panjab University to boost investor education and awareness. The initiative addresses a stark gap where only 9.5 percent of the 63 percent of households aware of securities products are actively engaged. Pandey cautioned investors against anonymous tips, finfluencers, and exaggerated return claims, urging them to invest only in understood products. He emphasized that investor education is market infrastructure and advised starting early to let compounding work.
Why it matters
This initiative directly targets the growing risk of fraud and mis-selling in India’s expanding capital markets, protecting retail investors from unregulated channels. It aims to bridge the awareness-participation gap, which currently leaves a large portion of informed households inactive, thereby unlocking potential market participation.
