Security forces detain protesters during Tiranga rally at Connaught Place

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

Around 6 pm on Sunday, hundreds of CRPF and RAF personnel and orange low-floor buses took over A Block in Connaught Place ahead of the SFI women-only Tiranga rally near Rajiv Chowk Metro station Gate 7. Security personnel detained a woman social worker first, followed by others including a lawyer and her friend, who shouted that the detention was unlawful per a Supreme Court order. Former JNU students' union president Aishe Ghosh and another protester climbed onto a moving bus holding the National Flag before being pulled down and pushed inside by officers. At 6.40 pm, a standoff lasted 15 minutes as around 10 protesters tried to stop a bus from leaving, with two women on its roof before police cleared the path for the vehicle to depart.

Why it matters

Protesters, including women and student activists, were detained and forcibly removed from a public rally site, raising concerns over policing action and the right to peaceful assembly in the national capital.
