Security surge at Dite-Dime bridge as anti-dam protests intensify in Arunachal

· India · Times of India, The Hindu

Forces have heavily fortified the Dite-Dime bridge in Arunachal Pradesh with large numbers of CAPF personnel to secure the critical crossing towards the India-China border, following anti-dam protests that have turned the site into a focal point of resistance. Officials reported deployment of 30 companies of CAPF across protest-hit districts and three companies of Assam Police Battalion in Pasighat, while three companies of Assam Police were also stationed at the border outpost near Tuting. The Dite-Dime bridge, also known as 65 Bridge, serves as a key bottleneck on the Dite-Dime-Migging highway towards Tuting near the Line of Actual Control, and the heavy deployment aims to prevent further breaches during ongoing protests. The security build-up comes after at least four women were wounded in a clash on Oct 23 during a 12-hour bandh, when over 150 supporters allegedly threw stones at security personnel and tried to breach barricades.

Why it matters

The fortified deployment directly impacts local communities and environmental activists opposing the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project's pre-feasibility survey, while also disrupting movement on a strategically vital border crossing near the Line of Actual Control, raising concerns about both civilian safety and security preparedness in the region.
